ERAN UD TURAN: Recreating the Great Silk Road

Eran ud Turan is the world’s first and UK’s only re-enactment / living history group dedicated to the cultures of the Great Silk Road in Antiquity and the early Medieval period.

The heart of our reconstruction work currently lies with the Sogdians, an Iranic Central Asian peoples living in what is now eastern Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The Sogdians became famous as the main players on the so-called “Silk Roads” with influence stretching as far as Japan.

About the project

The rich and vibrant histories and cultures of the so-called Silk Roads, a geographical area stretching between Iran and China, are romanticised but poorly known. Eran ud Turan seeks to study and recreate these cultures.

The project was set up in 2014 and since then, we have exhibited and performed at several events across the UK and Europe, approaching re-enactment with a mixture of scientific accuracy, public education, heritage awareness, and fun. In addition to attending public re-enactment and academic events, we also host several private members-only events.

What do we do?

Our events allow people to engage with history in a fully immersive way – seeing, touching, and hearing first hand distant cultures of the past from faraway lands.

From archery, to weight lifting, to equestrianism, to banqueting, crafting, music, calligraphy, and more – we aim to faithfully reconstruct as many aspects of the past as we possibly can.

We work closely with archaeologists and historians to ensure our presentations are accurate and up-to-date.
